Raven Rock Shelter, MD

Today was very rigorous, with ascents and descents with nothing but rocks and more rocks. The uneven footing was hard on the feet.

One particular challenge was a small gushing river that I had to ford. Knee deep water with a strong current, and (of course) rocks in the river bed, made for a very stumbling crossing of about 25-30 yards. The water was unbelievably numbing and stinging cold. Oh, the surprises the trail throws at you!

I met several thru-hikers today, and tented at a shelter with a Boy Scout troop on a 3-4 day hike.

Will leave MD today and enter PA.

Northern Maryland, with Pennsylvania in the background.

  1. Glad to see you are having some excitement and getting support. Weather, wind and fording rivers sounds like a great start to me, even if you have a ZERO so early. You have time, which is more than the rest of us have.
